  • PSE BOW TUNING GUIDE

    March 3, 2009

This handy guide was posted by PSE years ago and is a good reference for anyone wishing to know how to tune their bow. While adjusting the initial "tiller" is only helpful for non-parallel limb bows, it is still a good reference for all. PSE offers a twist on the paper and walk back tuning and is a great method to fine tune the bow for use with field points and broadheads while maintaining the same Point of Impact (POI) throughout the entire range of the bow/arrow/projectile combination.

Some forms of broad heads will naturally be a bad combination with certain vanes and spines and you will have to  experiment with different combinations to determine what shoots best for your bow.

I am providing this as a reference and to aide the archer wanting to know how to properly tune their bow. All rights are still the property of PSE and I make no claims to any ownership what so ever.

The tuning guide can be found HERE.
  • New Preamble to the constitution

    February 9, 2009.

The following has been attributed to State Representative Mitchell Kaye from GA. This guy should run for President one day...

'We the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great-grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden, delusional. We hold these truths to be self evident: that a whole lot of people are confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim they require a Bill of NON-Rights.'

    ARTICLE I:

You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything.

    ARTICLE II:

You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc.; but the world is full of dummies, and probably always will be.

    ARTICLE III:

You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful; do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy.

    ARTICLE IV:

You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes.

    ARTICLE V:

You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in public health care.

    ARTICLE VI:

You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us want to see you get the blue juice

    ARTICLE VII:

You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won't have the right to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure.

    ARTICLE VIII:

You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have a job, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful.

    ARTICLE IX:

You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to PURSUE happiness, which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

    ARTICLE X:

This is an English speaking country. We don't care where you came from, English is our language. Learn it!

    Lastly

    ARTICLE XI:

You do not have the right to change our country's history or heritage. This country was founded on the belief in one true God. And yet, you are given the freedom to believe in any religion, any faith, or no faith at all; with no fear of persecution. The phrase IN GOD WE TRUST is part of our heritage and history, sorry if you are uncomfortable with it.

If you agree, share this with a friend. No, you don't have to, and nothing tragic will befall you if you don't. I just think it's about time common sense is allowed to flourish. Sensible people of the United States must speak out because if you do not, who will?

  • 40 Reasons to ban guns (don't worry this is gun friendly)

    February 7, 2009.

    1. Banning guns works, which is why New York, DC, Detroit & Chicago cops need guns.

    2. Washington DC’s low murder rate of 69 per 100,000 is due to strict gun control, and Indianapolis’ high murder rate of 9 per 100,000 is due to the lack of gun control.

    3. Statistics showing high murder rates justify gun control but statistics showing increasing murder rates after gun control are “just statistics.”

    4. The Brady Bill and the Assault Weapons Ban, both of which went into effect in 1994 are responsible for the decrease in violent crime rates, which have been declining since 1991.

    5. We must get rid of guns because a deranged lunatic may go on a shooting spree at any time and anyone who would own a gun out of fear of such a lunatic is paranoid.

    6. The more helpless you are the safer you are from criminals.

    7. An intruder will be incapacitated by tear gas or oven spray, but if shot with a .357 Magnum will get angry and kill you.

    8. A woman raped and strangled is morally superior to a woman with a smoking gun and a dead rapist at her feet.

    9. When confronted by violent criminals, you should “put up no defense - give them what they want, or run” (Handgun Control Inc. Chairman Pete Shields, Guns Don’t Die - People Do, 1981, p. 125).

    10. The New England Journal of Medicine is filled with expert advice about guns; just like Guns & Ammo has some excellent treatises on heart surgery.

    11. One should consult an automotive engineer for safer seat belts, a civil engineer for a better bridge, a surgeon for internal medicine, a computer programmer for hard drive problems, and Sarah Brady for firearms expertise.

    12. The 2nd Amendment, ratified in 1787, refers to the National Guard, which was created 130 years later, in 1917.

    13. The National Guard, federally funded, with bases on federal land, using federally-owned weapons, vehicles, buildings and uniforms, punishing trespassers under federal law, is a “state” militia.

    14. These phrases: “right of the people peaceably to assemble,” “right of the people to be secure in their homes,” “enumerations herein of certain rights shall not be construed to disparage others retained by the people,” and “The powers not delegated herein are reserved to the states respectively, and to the people” all refer to individuals, but “the right of the people to keep and bear arms” refers to the state.

    15. “The Constitution is strong and will never change.” But we should ban and seize all guns thereby violating the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Amendments to that Constitution.

    16. Rifles and handguns aren’t necessary to national defense! Of course, the army has hundreds of thousands of them.

    17. Private citizens shouldn’t have handguns, because they aren’t “military weapons”, but private citizens shouldn’t have “assault rifles”, because they are military weapons.

    18. In spite of waiting periods, background checks, fingerprinting, government forms, etc., guns today are too readily available, which is responsible for recent school shootings. In the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s,anyone could buy guns at hardware stores, army surplus stores, gas stations, variety stores, Sears mail order, no waiting, no background check, no fingerprints, no government forms and there were no school shootings.

    19. The NRA’s attempt to run a “don’t touch” campaign about kids handling guns is propaganda, but the anti-gun lobby’s attempt to run a “don’t touch” campaign is responsible social activity.

    20. Guns are so complex that special training is necessary to use them properly, and so simple to use that they make murder easy.

    21. A handgun, with up to 4 controls, is far too complex for the typical adult to learn to use, as opposed to an automobile that only has 20.

    22. Women are just as intelligent and capable as men but a woman with a gun is “an accident waiting to happen” and gun makers’ advertisements aimed at women are “preying on their fears.”

    23. Ordinary people in the presence of guns turn into slaughtering butchers but revert to normal when the weapon is removed.

    24. Guns cause violence, which is why there are so many mass killings at gun shows.

    25. A majority of the population supports gun control, just like a majority of the population supported owning slaves.

    26. Any self-loading small arm can legitimately be considered to be a “weapon of mass destruction” or an “assault weapon.”

    27. Most people can’t be trusted, so we should have laws against guns, which most people will abide by because they can be trusted.

    28. The right of Internet pornographers to exist cannot be questioned because it is constitutionally protected by the Bill of Rights, but the use of handguns for self defense is not really protected by the Bill of Rights.

    29. Free speech entitles one to own newspapers, transmitters, computers, and typewriters, but self- defense only justifies bare hands.

    30. The ACLU is good because it uncompromisingly defends certain parts of the Constitution, and the NRA is bad, because it defends other parts of the Constitution.

    31. Charlton Heston, a movie actor as president of the NRA was a cheap lunatic who should be ignored, but Michael Douglas, a movie actor as a representative of Handgun Control, Inc. is an ambassador for peace who is entitled to an audience at the UN arms control summit.

    32. Police operate with backup within groups, which is why they need larger capacity pistol magazines than do “civilians” who must face criminals alone and therefore need less ammunition.

    33. We should ban “Saturday Night Specials” and other inexpensive guns because it’s not fair that poor people have access to guns too.

    34. Police officers have some special Jedi-like mastery over handguns that private citizens can never hope to obtain.

    35. Private citizens don’t need a gun for self- protection because the police are there to protect them even though the Supreme Court says the police are not responsible for their protection.

    36. Citizens don’t need to carry a gun for personal protection but police chiefs, who are desk-bound administrators who work in a building filled with cops, need a gun.

    37. “Assault weapons” have no purpose other than to kill large numbers of people. The police need assault weapons. You do not.

    38. When Microsoft pressures its distributors to give Microsoft preferential promotion, that’s bad; but when the Federal government pressures cities to buy guns only from Smith & Wesson, that’s good.

    39. Trigger locks do not interfere with the ability to use a gun for defensive purposes, which is why you see police officers with one on their duty weapon.

    40. Handgun Control, Inc., says they want to “keep guns out of the wrong hands.” Guess what? You have the wrong hands.

  • rifle Accurizing

    January 28, 2009.

The object is to make everything concentric to the datum of the action. Blue Printing the Bolt Action Rifle... Why?: To help satisfy the obsession of owning the most accurate rifle possible.

Your rifle may not be performing to the accuracy of which it is capable. Accurizing is the process of improving the accuracy of your rifle by doing some (or all) of the modifications listed below. Even when these modifications have been completed, you still may require hand loaded ammunition to obtain the most accurate performance from your rifle, as the example below shows.

    1. Bed the action
    2. Work the trigger
    3. Recrown the barrel
    4. True all surfaces
        a) Face & True Front of the Receiver
        b) Re-cut inner barrel seat
        c) Lap Bolt lugs & receiver locking recesses
        d) True & Lap bolt face
        e) Retrace Threads
    5. Rechamber the barrel

    Bedding the action:
The the first and most effective step in accurizing your rifle, We use various compounds in epoxy to bed the action including metal, carbon fiber, Marine Tex, and Pro-Bed. When the action is bedded, the stock and the action are rigid and the barrel floats, eliminating distortion that affects the path of the bullet.
The object is to make perfect contact in all critical areas of the receiver to the stock.

    Why:
Enhances the ability to torque the receiver in place.
Greatly reduces the chance of shifting the bullet impact related to temperature and humidity changes.
The receiver stays in exactly the same position shot after shot.

    Floating the Rifle Barrel:
Floating in gun talk means the rifle barrel is not touching any place in the barrel channel of the stock beyond the barrel shank. Sometimes the barrel shank is also floated.

If the fore end of the rifle stock warps or moves because of temperature or moisture changes, it will push the barrel, changing the point of impact. If the barrel is moved .001 of an inch in the stock, it would change the point of impact about 1” at 100 yards. It is very easy for a stock to move a barrel .005 to .010 of an inch.

Some rifles (a few) actually shoot better with a pressure point(s) on the barrel. Too much pressure on the barrel can string the shots left, right, or high depending on the pressure point.

    Trigger Pull:
To shoot well the shooter must have as light a trigger (weight the trigger finger pulls) as he or she can handle.
The shooter must consider cold or wet weather, off hand snap shooting, etc. when making this decision.
Working the trigger reduces the force of the trigger pull and eliminates any rough spots in the trigger assembly. This provides a smooth, firm trigger pull that eliminates any "jerk" when the trigger releases.

    Rechambering the barrel:
Insures that the chamber is true and perfectly aligned with the axis of the bore. It also allows you to use a different cartridge of the same bore diameter than the rifle was originally designed to use.

    Recrowning the barrel:
Insures that the bullet touches the lands in the bore of the barrel uniformly as it leaves the barrel, insuring that there is no unbalanced force on the bullet that will affect the path of the bullet.

    Trueing all surfaces:
Blueprinting insures that the receiver, the bolt face, and the barrel are all concentric and all faces are perpendicular to the axis of the bore, and the locking lugs mate completely and squarely in their recesses.
The machining of these components is critical because the tremendous pressure generated inside the action and barrel of the rifle will distort them, affecting the path of the bullet.

    Hand Loaded Ammunition:
When the rifle has been made as accurate as possible as described above, it still may not shoot perfectly with factory ammunition because each rifle can perform best with different cartridge and bullet configurations. For example: some rifles shoot best with the bullet 0.001" off the lands while others shoot best when the bullet is 0.050" off the lands. This means you must determine the optimum configuration through trial and error, essentially "tuning" the ammunition to the rifle.

  • 2008 Bowtech General

    January 27, 2009.

I recently added a brand new 2008 Bowtech General to my arsenal. The General was the flagship model for Bowtech in 2008 and features Bowtech's innovative Center Pivot riser technology along with its sleek third generation CenterTrac Binary Cams, creating extreme stability and accuracy.
    2008 General

The General also features a generous 8 1/4 inch brace height that adds to its ultra smooth shootability. Another added bonus to the General is the roller guard and ShortStop string suppressor combo that extends cable life and takes string suppression technology to new levels of silence.

The General recently was awarded  the distinction of  "Best of the Best" by Field and Stream.  Unfortunately, the General was impacted by an issue with the lower limb integrity on 60 and 70 pound models. Even though the issue affected less than 1 percent of all Generals made, Bowtech issued a recall to remedy all Generals.

For 2009, Bowtech discontinued the General and replaced it with the Admiral. Even though the General is no longer made it still shows strong sales of existing stock.

My model was a newer retrofitted model that featured metal "rivets" on the ends of the limbs (top and bottom). My General is a 60 to 70 pound model with 29 inch draw and "fast" modules installed. The bow features the new MAX 4™ camo pattern with  Bowtech's InVelvet™ finish that adds an almost rubbery feel to the entire bow .

  • 2008 December Rifle season Coues deer

    December 20, 2008.

The second day of the Decemeber Rifle season and the first sucked because I did't get a chance to get out until after 1 and my main spot was full so I had to go to a back up spot (blacktail canyon).

Saturday I got an early start, but hunting on post you have limited hunters allowed per section and my section was full when I got there at 5 in the morning!

Well back to my backup spot (same area I had to hunt th day before). This area was not know for big bucks and I had only see a few spike bucks the past few spotting trips.

Well, got to the spot before dawn and I decided to go up the mountain further to glass the opposite side of the mt better. on the way found some fresh scrapes and a few fresher rubs, but the scrub oak and cedars was too thick to get any type of shot off if i would have seen any deer.

Finally found a spot overlooking an old deer trail and had a good view of the opposing mt side to glass. after 4 hours of seeing nothing I was getting ready to pack out for lunch, but I heard some rocks way behind me rolldown the mt and thought I would stay for a little more. at 11 I used my quaker boy doe bleet twice in quick succession and then i was startled when i heard a hoof stomp and the exhale of a deer. I turned behind my left shoulder and nothing then to the right and caught a glimpse of the nose and then saw the rack.
    roby coues 08
Long story short 20 ft, off hand over the shoulder (literally) got a glimpse of neck in the scope pulled my head away because again over the shoulder, pulles the trigger with my left thumb (i am right handed) and held on to the foreend real tight with my right hand so the gun would nt recoil too bad and rip my thumb off or something (S&W i-bolt in 30/06 shooting federal powershok sp 150 gr.) anyway bullet took out some twigs on a dead mesquite and then hit the buck at the base of the neck and never made it out the left shoulder (probably because it took out the twigs on the way there).

Anyway, a 3 mile drag back to the truck and then weighed him at the ft. huachuca sportsmans center and he was a whopping 97 pounds field dressed (most couse whitetail's are around 100 pounds max with all the internals),  Rack was decent, but I have spotted bigger racked deer in my main spot, but have not seen one as big bodied as this buck.

Was told that he was the biggest this year (weight wise) and he is a nice 4x4 with perfectly identical tines on each side. I have not scored him yet, taxidermy will be done by Braggin Rights Taxedermy in Whetstone, AZ and will be scored at that point.
